At today's media day at Pepsi Center, Carmelo Anthony finally faced the media and discussed his situation in Denver. And yet nothing has really changed.
Many thanks to the Denver Post's Benjamin Hochman for getting an article up so quickly that recaps Anthony's media day. Among the notable things Anthony said are the following:
“I’m here today. Whatever the future holds, it holds.”
“At the end of the season, I’ll sit down with my team, I’ll sit down with the Nuggets, and we’ll talk about it.”
“I’ve never said I wanted to be traded. I never once said anything about trade talk.”
Anthony is saying all the right things short of committing to anything tangible. But in reality nothing has changed and nothing changes until Melo signs that three-year, $65 million extension. Moreover, it remains unconscionable to me that Anthony would wait this long to sit down with Nuggets management, head coach George Karl and his teammates to discuss the situation internally. Melo basically tried to pull a LeBron on us by skipping town without ever having to face the music. But by stalling all negotiations the Nuggets may have bought themselves either a better deal or the return of their superstar. Their delay tactics are looking pretty good right now.
Of additional interest to me were Coach Karl's comments regarding how the organization has handled the Anthony situation:
"Why the Doomsday? I think our PR staff does a horrible job in the summer. I don't think we want to trade Melo."I don't think the Nuggets want to trade Melo, either. It's just that they may have no choice if their lone superstar doesn't want to be here anymore.
