Everyone here remembers Rex Chapman.
He was a player for 12 years in the NBA with several different teams including the Charlotte Hornets and the Phoenix Suns. More famously for Nuggets fans, from 2006 to 2010 he was Vice President of Player Development in a notoriously convoluted and cantankerous front office set up with Vice President of Basketball Operations Mark Warkentien and unofficial front office member Bret Bearup. Chapman played a large part in bringing Allen Iverson to Denver during Carmelo Anthony‘s suspension in 2006.
You remember that right?
Well it turns out that Chapman was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona for shoplifting at an Apple store over the course of several months. Here is an excerpt:
Police began investigating the case in August when employees reported a series of shoplifting incidents involving the same suspect over a period of a few months.
The suspect was identified by multiple Apple store employees as Rex Chapman because of his previous celebrity status as an NBA basketball player.
Police said Chapman allegedly picked up items in the store and made it appear that he was paying for them with an iPhone app through the store's self-checkout system.
He would then leave the store without actually paying for the items. He allegedly took merchandise to a local pawn shop and sold it for cash.
An extremely strange series of events for the Nuggets former executive. I was most recently doing color analysis of Kentucky Wildcats basketball games during the NCAA tournament. If this is true, the alleged events are rather sad. If Chapman needed money he could have any number of people who would help him out.
