Yes, that’s 17 players on the Denver Nuggets roster for training camp as former Milwaukee Bucks forward Joe Alexander signs a training camp deal, according to Shams Charania of RealGM.
Free agent forward Joe Alexander has signed a training camp contract with the Denver Nuggets, a league source told RealGM.
Alexander, who finalized his deal on Tuesday, was the No. 8 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft to the Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 4.7 points and 1.9 rebounds as a rookie, and the 6-foot-8 product participated in the slam dunk contest at the 2009 All-Star weekend.
Alexander never found a niche in the league out of West Virginia University, playing professionally in the D-League, Russia and China after being released by the Chicago Bulls in 2010.
Shams has all you need to know above. Alexander is super athletic, but he never quite put things together after three seasons at West Virginia. He averaged 16.9 points his junior season as a Mountaineer, but was never much of a three-point shooter (which you pretty much have to be in today's NBA as a guard or forward).
It’s a very good thing for the Nuggets to have extra bodies in camp, especially at small forward where the Nuggets have Danilo Gallinari coming back off injury and the oft-injured Wilson Chandler. This will allow Brian Shaw and his staff to run competitive practices and bring Gallo and Chandler along at their own pace.
It will be interesting to see Alexander up close. From the looks of it, he can still fly:
