According to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, Nuggets forward Wilson Chandler is fed up with the uncertainty of his role and ultimately wants out of Denver:
Chandler’s frustration is born out of the inconsistency with his role. While he’s having a career year, averaging 15.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, two assists and 30.2 minutes per game for a 21-27 Nuggets team that is currently ninth in the Western Conference, he hasn’t started since Jan. 12 – a win over Indiana in which he had 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and had a plus-22 rating.
Chandler has been primarily a reserve player for the Nuggets in his tenure here, but has started 13 games this season with Coach Michael Malone tinkering around with the lineups. In January, Malone moved Kenneth Faried back into the starting power forward spot, placing Chandler on the bench once again.
Amick’s sources appear to be “two people with knowledge of Chandler’s situation” who spoke to USA TODAY Sports under the condition of anonymity. It is worth noting that according to Amick, “While it’s not believed that Chandler has requested a trade, the Nuggets are known to be aware of his concerns.”
This report actually comes as a huge surprise, as Chandler was thought to be committed to Denver for the long run. After re-signing with the team in the summer of 2015, he penned a letter to the city and fans confirming his commitment to the Nuggets and his desire to help turn the franchise around.
This news is also untimely as Nuggets starting forward Danilo Gallinari left last night’s game against Memphis due to a groin injury, which if serious would mean extended playing time for Chandler and a move back into the starting lineup. Rookie Juancho Hernangomez also stands to benefit from either Gallo’s absence or a Chandler departure.
The question remains: will Denver trade Chandler, and will they find a suitable partner? There are several contending teams for which Chandler could make a huge impact, such as the Los Angeles Clippers or Cleveland Cavaliers. If the Nuggets and Chandler do part ways, let’s hope it would be to a team with a better situation for a guy who has already given so much to this city and team.
