Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reports that the Philadelphia 76ers tried to sign Denver Nuggets Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri to be their own general manager earlier this summer. Interestingly enough, Woj states that the Nuggets actually gave the Sixers permission to speak with Ujiri, even though he has a full year left on his contract. Update: Here is where things get interesting – Sam Amick of Sports Illustrated is reporting the Nuggets did not give the Sixers permission to speak with Ujiri.
However it actually happened, this shows that people around the league are starting to take notice of Ujiri's abilities running a basketball team. It also indicates that the league is aware that Ujiri is one of the lowest paid general managers in basketball. Maybe, just maybe, Stan Kroenke needs to break his habit of waiting until the last possible minute to negotiate a new contract and just sign Ujiri already.
One thing is clear, the rest of the league knows Masai is good. Don't let this realization pass without action. Stan, now is time to break your "business model" don't you think?
