According to Shams Charania, the Denver Nuggets are signing free agent guard Cam Whitmore to a two-way NBA contract

Whitmore will join K.J. Simpson and Bryce Hopkins as two-way contract players on the Denver Nuggets roster which now stands at 14 guaranteed contracts and 3 two-ways. Whitmore was selected 20th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2023 before being traded to the Washington Wizards in 2025 as part of the C.J. McCollum/Jordan Poole deal. He was traded again this offseason to the Cleveland Cavaliers as a small part of the larger Peyton Watson trade and now ironically finds his way to Denver, the team that traded Watson.

For Whitmore this represents an opportunity to resurrect a quickly dying career. After a solid rookie season that saw him average 12.3 points over 47 games, his minutes, scoring and efficiency all dipped the following year. Last season he shot an alarming 52.8 True Shooting percentage that was largely drug down by taking 7.5 three point attempts a game but converting them at only a 28.6% rate. In Denver, Whitmore will enjoy relative anonymity on the court given the talent around him and likely will be left open more than he was in either Houston or Washington. That could certainly help him improve his efficiency numbers but with a two-way contract he is effectively buried on the roster so the opportunities, no matter how wide open, may be sparse.

For the Nuggets, Whitmore represents depth and a low risk move. On a two-way contract he doesn’t count against Denver’s cap and gives them another veteran in their deep reserves to go with Simpson. While Whitmore certainly hasn’t lived up to the billing of a first round pick, if the Nuggets can get him back to his rookie level of play, even if the numbers are lessened by fewer minutes, then he’ll be a steal on a two-way contract. The Nuggets open roster spot also gives them an option to elevate Whitmore to a full roster spot at a later date if he is playing well.
